Baby Mouth Breathing

Psalm 139:13-16 ESV

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

Mouth Breathing

is detrimental to the human health. Through nasal breathing, we obtain Nitric Oxide, majority of what the body needs through this route. Lacking this will increase the cardiovascular risk of the person.

For babies, they are growing, and we want them to grow to their very maximum potential their genetics allow. But when the nose is congested or the tongue is tied, they will open their mouths to sleep and this will inhibit proper development of growth and motor function.

What does this mean?

  • This could mean baby can have tongue or lip ties.

    • baby may not be able to get enough milk due to tongue or lip ties

    • baby may be fussy

    • baby may want to feed frequently

    • baby may like to fall asleep while feeding

    • mom may not produce enough milk since baby may not be able to feed normally

  • Mom and baby diet both may contain allergens like dairy

    • Breastfeeding moms have reported reactions such as constipation, vomit from their babies when moms had dairy, but stopped when moms stopped

    • Moms have also reported having had a food which is an allergen, and baby break out with allergic reaction after breastfeeding

    • baby has rhinitis and congested, promotes mouth breathing, which promotes improper growth and development

  • Baby could have a food sensitivity that may have developed from dysbiosis in the gut.

    • This can be due to the mouth breathing which is a sleep disordered breathing problem that can cause gut dysbiosis

    • Dairy consumption by baby and mom both can cause the same problem

  • Mom producing less milk

    • Baby is not able to obtain enough milk due to tongue or lip ties, which promotes the milk production, but this becomes diminished

    • Mom generally stressed and anxious or demanding daily schedule

    • Mom is not active in a relaxing way, always at home and not going out for fresh air sunshine
